Power wheelchairs (also known as powerchairs, electric or motorised wheelchairs) support users across home, community and outdoor environments, with seating and drive controls configured to their clinical and lifestyle needs.
Power Mobility has supplied powerchairs to Queensland users since 1981, working directly with clients, prescribers and carers to source the right chair from leading global manufacturers including Magic Mobility, Quantum Rehab, Pride Mobility, Ottobock, Amylior, Sunrise Medical and many more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Power wheelchairs and mobility scooters both support people with limited mobility, but they’re designed for very different needs. Power wheelchairs are operated via joystick or alternative drive controls, typically have four or more wheels, and may offer highly customisable seating including tilt, recline and pressure care options. They’re built for users who need some level of postural support and may need to use the chair for extended periods. Mobility scooters use handlebars and a throttle, are designed primarily for outdoor use, and suit those who can walk short distances but need help covering longer ones. Power wheelchairs are the more appropriate choice for people with progressive conditions, complex seating needs, or those requiring full-time mobility support.

Power wheelchairs can be funded through several pathways in Australia. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports eligible participants under 65 with significant disability. My Aged Care provides funding through Support at Home for people 65 and over. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) supports eligible veterans, and Queensland residents may access the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS). Private health insurance may offer partial rebates depending on the policy, and charitable organisations may provide grants. Power Mobility is a registered NDIS provider and works with prescribers, plan managers and support coordinators to ensure equipment fits within plan budgets. A full overview is available on our funding hub.

Yes. Power Mobility offers trial arrangements on most power wheelchairs, allowing a person to assess the chair in their own home and daily environment before committing. This is particularly important for scripted powerchairs, where postural fit, drive control and seating configuration need to be confirmed alongside the prescribing therapist. To arrange a trial, submit a request through our website, call us on 07 3265 4663, or visit our Geebung showroom to view our range in person.

Most power wheelchairs are designed for outdoor use, although performance varies significantly by drive type and build. Front-wheel and rear-wheel drive chairs typically handle outdoor terrain well, offering good traction on footpaths, kerbs and uneven surfaces. Mid-wheel drive chairs are better suited to indoor and smooth outdoor use. For users navigating rough terrain, grass, gravel or off-road environments, four-wheel drive and all-terrain models – such as those in the Magic Mobility range – are purpose-built with larger tyres, stronger suspension and higher ground clearance. Battery range, weather protection and tyre type should all be considered when selecting a chair for outdoor use.

Yes. Power Mobility operates an in-house service and repair team covering the full range of powerchairs we supply, including electrical, mechanical and customisation work. Our mobile repair service covers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and regional areas including Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Rockhampton. Onsite repairs are also available at our Geebung workshop. Power wheelchairs typically require annual servicing, with battery and tyre checks recommended every 6-12 months, and immediate inspection if performance issues arise.
