A power wheelchair is built around two core systems: the power base, which houses the motors, wheels, batteries and electronic controls, and the seating system, which supports posture, pressure care and positioning over long periods of use.

Who power wheelchairs are designed for

Power wheelchairs are most often prescribed for individuals living with conditions that affect long-term mobility, strength or endurance. This includes progressive neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, advanced arthritis, and complex disability profiles requiring postural support beyond what a manual wheelchair can offer.

For paediatric users, bariatric users, and those requiring scripted seating, a powerchair is typically prescribed by an occupational therapist or physiotherapist working alongside a specialised supplier.

Types of power wheelchairs available at Power Mobility

Wheelchairs are broadly categorised as either scripted or non-scripted. Scripted powerchairs are customised to the person’s clinical and postural requirements under the guidance of a therapist, while non-scripted models are configured for general use and typically faster to deliver.

Drive type also defines how a chair performs in different environments. Mid-wheel drive chairs offer the tightest turning circle and are ideal for indoor use, front-wheel drive models handle uneven terrain and kerbs well, rear-wheel drive chairs deliver stability at higher speeds, and four-wheel drive powerchairs are purpose-built for outdoor and off-road conditions.

For those with high transport needs, folding and travel powerchairs offer lightweight, transportable solutions. Bariatric power wheelchairs are engineered for higher weight capacities and reinforced seating, and alternative drive controls, including chin, head and sip-and-puff systems, are available for people who cannot operate a standard joystick.

The right chair depends on the person’s primary environment, transport requirements, postural and pressure care needs, drive control capability, and long-term clinical trajectory. Accessories, customisation and seating options

Few people simply buy a powerchair off the shelf. Most require some level of customisation, whether that’s a tailored seating system, an alternative drive control, or accessories that adapt the chair to daily routines.

Power Mobility’s in-house workshop, led by a Technical Director with more than 35 years of experience, specialises in customising power wheelchairs to the user’s exact requirements. This includes pressure care cushions, custom headrests and backrests, tilt and recline configurations, elevating leg rests, programmable controls, and accessories such as USB chargers, cup holders and tables. A full range of cushions, backrests and headrests is also available, and our team works closely with prescribing therapists to ensure every customisation matches the clinical brief.

Funding your power wheelchair

Power wheelchairs are accessible through several Australian funding pathways. Power Mobility is a registered NDIS provider and works with participants, support coordinators and plan managers to source equipment within plan budgets. Eligible Queensland residents may also access funding through MASS, Support at Home (for people 65 and over), DVA entitlements, insurance (such as NIISQ, TAC and iCare) or private funding.
