Catherine, Occupational Therapist

Amy Bjornson talking about MAT Evaluation to a group of therapists in a wheelchair training session.

MAT Evaluation 101

"Have you done a MAT evaluation?" Everyone asks for it, but do you know why? The Mechanical Assessment Tool (MAT) is a musculoskeletal examination of the client's range of motion, joint flexibility, muscle length, and skeletal alignment. It involves postural assessment of the person in their existing seating system, in supine, and sitting on a firm surface. The MAT process facilitates the selection of a seating system with appropriate ‘size’ and ‘shape’ for the client. It is carried out with respect to the client's requirement for functional capacity, posture and pressure management. Join the Sunrise Clinical Director, Amy Bjornson and the Power Mobility Team as they walk you through the 101 of MAT evaluations. Special emphasis will be placed on the value of a "hands on" seating assessment - both supine and sitting . We'll provide the practical tips and tricks to make you much more comfortable doing a MAT assessment.

Get with the Program – Power Wheelchair Programming & Alternative Controls (up to 3hrs)

The way you program a power wheelchair can make all the difference! In this session, you’ll learn the basics of programming a PDWC, including how the right programming can take your client’s chair to the next level, how to make the most of environmental controls and how to make a chair more drivable. This session will also touch on Assistive Technology Trialling & Scripting for both Standard & Complex power wheelchairs.

Introduction to Power Wheelchair Scripting (up to 2.5hrs)

The process of working out what type of power wheelchair is needed and what features should be considered can be daunting for therapists who are new to prescribing assistive technology. We’ll take you through the questions that should be asked when scripting a power wheelchair and guide you through what types of power wheelchairs to consider and which features may be required.

To Script or Not to Script – Scripted vs Non-Scripted Power Wheelchairs (up to 2.5hrs)

There are some important factors to consider when determining whether your client requires a scripted or unscripted power wheelchair. Many people in unscripted chairs may actually be much better off in a scripted chair. However, before making a choice, you need to take into account the type of disability your client has, their daily needs, their lifestyle and how to maximise their comfort. Budget and funding will also need to be addressed.
