Positive Effects of Early Powered Mobility on Children’s Psychosocial & Play Skills

This study suggests that powered mobility increased parents’ positive perceptions of their child's social skills, increased the number of mobility activities during play, and may have positively impacted the quality of play for the children. These findings may be helpful in justifying the recommendation of powered mobility to young children and in justifying medical necessity of powered mobility for reimbursement by third party payers.

Why People with Neuromuscular Disorders Need Powerchairs: Evidence & Justifications

This paper explores the psychosocial impact of wheelchair and contextual factors on quality of life of people with neuromuscular disorders. The authors recommend that powered chairs should be made available to people with NMD in clinical practice and that where necessary, people with NMD should receive financial assistance to enable them to access an appropriate mobility device. More broadly, the findings from research of this type can be used to improve rehabilitation programs.
