Full House For Therapist Seating & Positioning Workshop

The presentation, Postural Challenges & Seating Solutions, was conducted by world-renowned seating expert, Dr Barend ter Haar, BSc DPhil ATP – Managing Director at both Healthcare Innovations Australia and BES Rehab in the UK. A specialist in seating and positioning (particularly in the areas of flammability, pressure mapping and measurement standards), Dr ter Haar sits on several International Standards and Advisory Boards and is an annual presenter at ATSA.

During this hands-on workshop, Dr ter Haar covered topics including:

• What makes a good cushion?
• What should a good back system provide?
• Pressure mapping and care.

“You could see some of the therapists having ‘light bulb’ moments, especially recent graduates and students,” said Power Mobility Territory Manager, Paul Hadfield. Many of them commented that this session provided new ways to solve problems that they hadn’t seen before.”

“They were a very inquisitive group, asking lots of questions. In particular, there were quite a few questions on pressure mapping – how it works, why they should pressure map and how to read and interpret the outcomes.”

“These education sessions are extremely important for therapists, as well as our staff. They present different ways to solve seating problems that we may not have thought of, which is excellent – because what may work for one person, may not work for another,” Paul explained.

“The session got all of the therapists comparing techniques and exchanging information – which is a very important part of these workshops. Sharing knowledge helps us to achieve excellent outcomes for our clients, who rely on us to provide the best solutions for them.”

“Many therapists have already requested trials of various cushions they learnt about on the day, and our team of Territory Managers is more than happy to facilitate these trials at their workplace or the client’s home – wherever is most convenient.”

“There’s no doubt that everyone walked away from the session with a lot more knowledge about the entire seating process. The feedback from therapists was very positive,” Paul said.
