“Have you done a MAT evaluation?” Everyone asks for it, but do you know why? The Mechanical Assessment Tool (MAT) is a musculoskeletal examination of the client’s range of motion, joint flexibility, muscle length, and skeletal alignment. It involves postural assessment of the person in their existing seating system, in supine, and sitting on a firm surface.
The MAT process facilitates the selection of a seating system with appropriate ‘size’ and ‘shape’ for the client. It is carried out with respect to the client’s requirement for functional capacity, posture and pressure management.
Sunrise Medical Clinical Director, Amy Bjornson will walk you through the 101 of MAT evaluations. Special emphasis will be placed on the value of a “hands on” seating assessment – both supine and sitting. We’ll provide practical tips and tricks to make you much more comfortable doing a MAT assessment, and help you translate that evidence to increase wheelchair trial success and efficiency.
