Everything You Need To Know About Lift Chairs

If sitting down or getting up out of a chair is becoming more of a challenge for you (maybe you’ve got arthritis or limited mobility), a lift chair may be the perfect solution! A lift chair is operated with a motor that lifts the chair up and forwards to make sitting and standing much easier.

Here, we address some of the most frequently asked questions about lift chairs, so you can make the right decision for your needs.

Do all lift chairs have the same number of positions?

No, not all lift chairs have the same number of positions. Some have two, some have three, and some have an infinite number of positions. Lift chairs with three or more positions have two separate motors – one to control the headrest and one to control the footrest. This gives you the most flexibility – you can lay flat, sit upright, recline with your feet up, or choose almost any other position you can imagine. With a two-position chair, you’ll be limited to reclining to 45 degrees, while a three-position lift chair allows you to fully recline, like The Studio lift chair, pictured above.

Is the lift function the same in all lift chairs?

All lift chairs provide a lifting function, however, not all of them provide this function in the same way. Some chairs don’t lift a person up high enough for them to stand with ease, which could be a problem for people with limited mobility. So make sure you choose a chair with a smooth and solid lifting action that makes it easy to stand. Also, make sure the frame is sturdy enough to avoid wobbling.

Does a lift chair need more space than a normal recliner?

While a lift chair might look compact when it’s in the seated position, it can actually take up quite a lot of room when reclined. In fact, most models work by sliding out and backwards, which means they can’t be placed too close to walls and other furniture. So it’s important to know the measurements of the room you’ll be placing the chair in. If the fully expanded chair won’t fit in your space, you might need to consider a more compact model that can safely sit against a wall, without bumping into it while reclining, such as the Pride LL-805 Lift Chair. This Wall Hugger only requires 10cm between the wall and the chair.

Do lift chairs come in different sizes?

Just as people come in all different sizes, so do lift chairs. To ensure you get the perfect fit, it’s best to try out a few lift chairs before purchasing. If that’s not possible, give your measurements (height and weight) to the person buying the lift chair on your behalf and a mobility specialist will be able to help them choose the right size lift chair for you.

How do I choose the right fabric?

It is important to consider the type of fabric carefully, especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in your lift chair. Most people want the chair to be covered in a comfortable, soft fabric, such as microfibre. However, for those with incontinence issues, fabric may not be the best choice. Instead, choose an easy-to-clean, leather-look material, which can be easily wiped down.

Are there any extra features I should look out for?

There are a number of extra features available in lift chairs including cup holders, speed variations, USB ports and much more. Ask your local dealer to show you the different options available.

Do lift chairs require any set up?

While most lift chairs require minimal set up, they can be very bulky and usually come in a large box with lots of protective packaging. Once you’ve chosen the lift chair you want, the easiest thing to do is to ask the dealer to deliver, unpack and install the lift chair, and then run through all the features and warranty details with you in your own home, for complete peace of mind.
